QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS

Favourite class: Literature in War. Through various pieces of literature, I learned about the events of World War I & II – some of which I was not aware of previously. The class and my teacher, Ms. Naomi Gal, helped develop and shape my way of thinking and writing. I enjoyed how Ms. Gal presented the learning materials and encourages a daily class discussion where everyone had to speak and share their opinions.

Favourite Event: My favourite event at the college is the Club Fair as you get to know what the school clubs and organisations have been doing, and what their plans are for the rest of the school year - besides this, they have a lot of free food and giveaways for all the students!

First words that come to mind when you think of Moravian College: Excellent experience.

What were your school experiences like before Moravian College?

I have lived and studied in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania where they follow the British school system. I attended Wazo Hill Secondary School and Alpha High School. My school experiences were very different from those in college. In Tanzania, I went to boarding schools where everything was very regimented, but at Moravian, I have more free time to study on my own rather than spending most of the time in class.

Why did you decide to study at Moravian College in the US?

I had no plans of studying in the US, but a few weeks before joining university back home in Tanzania, my dad came up with this idea. My father was part of the Moravian College graduating class of ’89, and he thought it would be a great opportunity for me to have the same experience. Scholarship opportunities were available and I had good grades, so I took my chances, applied, and was accepted!

What are you studying at Moravian College?

Currently, my major is undecided, but I am interested in pursuing Business Management. I would like to eventually work for myself; if one day I am able to manage my own business, I would consider that a success.

Did you have any difficulties adjusting to life in the Unites States?

With every move, there can be challenges. For me, first it was the culture and second, it was the weather. Regarding the cultural differences, everyday I am learning new vocabulary, customs and habits and am finding it easier day by day  to integrate and find my place at Moravian and in the US. As far as the different climate is concerned, with time, I know I will get used to it!

What has life at Moravian been like for you?

The experience at Moravian has been great as I have been able to learn new things, and meet new people. This has given me a wide knowledge of different cultures and personalities. The town is small, but it is a good place to live and study. Everything is close to the college, people are friendly, and it’s a historical area with much to see. The college also has a special programme for all international students before normal classes commence. This helps overseas students adjust, and learn a few things about America and how to live there.

Moravian is a very welcoming place, and when you have problems people are always there to help out - it’s just a matter of finding the right person. I remember my first day at the college, I was given a campus tour by a senior student that helped me become familiar with the layout of the school, and the processes and procedures. My experience at Moravian College has gone beyond my expectations.

Are you participating in any extracurricular activities on campus?

No, so far I have not taken part in any of the clubs or sports, but I’m thinking of playing soccer and maybe later, joining the Moravian College student government.

What would you say about Moravian College to other students considering applying?

Moravian College is moulding and preparing me to be independent; to be able to use my classroom experiences in real life. Here, you will find teachers who are eager to help students gain knowledge and perform well in their courses, and their professional lives. There are plenty of resources available to students and the bottom line is that Moravian College will provide you with a quality education in a nurturing environment.
