School Description

Established in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Synod of the South as an academy for men, the college became the first four-year, church-related college in South Carolina. It was named for Ebenezer Erskine, one of the founders of one of the antecedent bodies of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and a pastor. Erskine began to admit women in 1894 and officially became coeducational in 1899. Some of the notable Erskine alumni include, but not limited to, Beth Couture, Brian Haynes, and Charles Haldeman.

          • 1992-1996, BS- Double Major, History and Economics

Eskine College- One of the South's Best Academic SecretsI attended Erskine from 1992-96, and recommend it highly to those seeking the more intensive level of academic instruction and personal attention that is lacking in the large state universities. Every professor I had knew me by name and was readily available for out-of class contact. The campus is a grand mix of old and new facilities, far removed from a big urban environment in the ideallic countryside of Western South Carolina. It is probably one of the safest campus environments in the entire country. I made many life-long friendships, and obtained an excellent education that prepared me well for my post graduate education at the university of South Carolina School of Law, and my legal career thereafter. A large percentage of graduates fare very well in the competitive post graduate professions such as law, medicine and business school. While the tuition is not cheap, there is a great deal of both need- based and merit- based scholarship opportunities.
