School Description

Samford University was founded by The Alabama Baptist State Convention in 1841 as the Howard College, named after John Howard, an English reformer from the 18th century. At the time, it only admitted men, but 55 years later, it produced its first female graduate following the institution's move to East Lake. After subsequent relocation, it finally achieved university status in 1965 as Samford University. Its namesake, Frank Park Samford, Sr., was an insurance executive and long time trustee of the university.

Today, up to 47 states and 29 foreign countries are represented by over 5,000 students enrolled in the university's 10 schools through which it offers over 150 baccalaureate majors and minors, as well as over 30 master's degree programs in areas of arts and sciences, business, divinity, education, law, nursing, pharmacy, and health. Its Birmingham campus is located on a 200-acres of manicured land that boasts of 50 Georgian-Colonial buildings, several recreational facilities, and 28 on-campus residence halls that accommodates over 2,000 students.
