University of Alberta was founded by two ambitious men: Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first Premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, a McGill University professor who became the University of Alberta’s first president. The University Act was passed in 1906 by the new government of Alberta and this paved the way for the official opening of the University in 1908.
The University saw many challenging times with the First World War; the influenza epidemic; the Great Depression, the Second World War and most recently it was affected by the series of cutbacks introduced by the Government of Alberta. The University nonetheless persevered through this all and today, it boasts twenty-one faculties; sixty-four departments; over 3,200 academic staff and over 36,000 students, a fourth of which represent 130 countries from around the world.

University of Alberta’s official colours, green and gold were chosen as they represent the natural beauty of the province of Alberta. “The green represents the wide stretches of prairie land flanked by deep spruce forests and is symbolic of hope and optimism and the gold represents the golden harvest fields and is symbolic of the light of knowledge.”
