Missouri Western State University was founded as St. Joseph Junior College in 1915. In 1969, the institution became a four-year college, and in 1977 it became a full member of the State of Missouri system. The college officially changed its name to Missouri Western State in 2005 after it was designated a university by the state. Today the university is located on more than 700 acres, and has programs that are accredited by highly revered bodies such as: the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
There are over 5,000 students at MWSU, from a variety of different countries. Life at MWSU offers students everything needed for a memorable campus, and academic, experience: The International Student Services Office on campus is willing to help international students with anything they need. Staff members not only help international students with their paperwork and required documents, but they help guide students through their entire education experience. Office staff also plan a variety of events for international students to help them adjust to life in the United States and to meet both international and domestic students. Events include an international fair, a soccer tournament, a lecture series and a variety of fun events and celebrations. Additionally, the office provides the following services: Orientation for new students, coordinating airport pick-up for new students, conducting a cultural adjustment seminar, discussion, or workshop, providing opportunities for service learning, leadership development and networking opportunities, planning programs for students, helping with verification letters to apply for a Social Security card, and/or a driver’s license, holding a workshop on Optional Practical Training (OPT), and Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

Financial Aid & Scholarship
A variety of merit-based aid is available to international students. Excellence Scholarship awards ranges from $500 to $2,000 each year. Automatic scholarships awards between $1,000 to $9,774 each year; however, requires official SAT or ACT scores. International Baccalaureate Certificate and Diploma $2,600-$3,600 each year. The University does not offer need based aid to international students.

Missouri Western State University has the third lowest tuition in the state of Missouri. The University's ranking in the 2017 edition of Best Colleges is Regional Colleges Midwest, Tier 2.
