University College Dublin was established in the year 1854, its founding rector was John Henry Cardinal Newman. University College Dublin was initially known as the Catholic University of Ireland, and then was renamed to Royal University before eventually being renamed to University College Dublin in the year 1908 after becoming part of the National University of Ireland (NUI). The school started operating as an independent educational institute from 1997 onwards.
Today, University College Dublin over its rich history of 160 years has become one of Europe's leading research-intensive universities. UCD's International Foundation Year programme offers international students direct pathway to University College Dublin undergraduate programmes. University College Dublin is recognized as Ireland's largest university and currently it hosts over 30,000 students from more than 120 countries across the globe. International students make up almost 25% of the total population in UCD's student body.
